The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities concluded he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under house arrest.

The one-time leader was convicted of planning a military coup in last fall and handed more than a 27-year term in jail, but he continued under house arrest pending court reviews.

High Court Judge the presiding justice said the move to detain the 70-year-old politician was a precautionary step after fresh information emerged.

This encompassed seeking to disable his tracking device and a invitation to a demonstration that could facilitate a potential flight.

Context of Sentencing

He was found guilty of leading a plot aimed at retaining his authority after he failed to win the 2022 election to his political opponent, President Lula.

Top judicial officials said that he was aware of a plot which involved plans to kill the current president and his VP candidate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to imprison and murder the presiding judge - the High Court judge who has been managing the former president's case.

The conspiracy was stopped because it failed to get the support of the military leaders. Lula was inaugurated without problem on January 1st, 2023.

But a seven days after, on January 8th, thousands of Bolsonaro supporters attacked and damaged public facilities in the federal district, Brasília.

The law enforcement took action and around 1,500 people were detained.
